Create That Spa Feeling at Home with a Budget Bathroom Makeover

Budget Bathroom Makeover on a Shoestring

A full bathroom renovation would be lovely, but unless you’ve got at least $8,000 stashed away, that gleaming, newly tiled shower with a spa-style rainfall head will have to wait.

Don’t despair over your worn bath towels just yet. There are plenty of ways to refresh a bathroom on a shoestring, producing an updated look without emptying your savings.

You can spend nothing but a bit of time or invest a couple hundred dollars depending on your room and budget.

Budget Bathroom Makeover: Free or Very Cheap

An ultra-cheap makeover? Free up counter space — especially in a compact bathroom — by reorganizing drawers and cabinets to store more items efficiently.

“Visual clutter wears on us and affects us emotionally, even when we don’t realize it,” said Allison Marshall, a certified professional organizer.

Still, many people put off tackling bathroom organization. Marshall recommends breaking the job into three manageable steps.

1. Empty Everything Out

“Start by pulling everything out and sorting it into categories,” Marshall advised. “Toothcare, haircare, skincare, makeup.”

Then examine each pile and determine what you truly use.

2. Purge

Keep a trash bag and a giveaway bag nearby. If you’ve got a lipstick or self-tanner you paid for but never liked, stop holding onto it and get rid of it, Marshall suggested.

3. Sort into Containers

“Once sorted, the containers are the finishing touch,” she said.

There are inexpensive plastic bins and boxes at dollar stores, Target and Walmart, but you can skip buying new items and reuse shoeboxes trimmed to fit drawers or clean plastic food tubs from the kitchen.

Here are straightforward steps for achieving a luxe feel in a small bath without spending much.

Update Your Linens

If your towels are past their prime, consider replacing your bath towels, hand towels and washcloths. White towels brighten the room and stay fresh when washed with bleach or vinegar.

“Swapping out linens is one of the cheapest changes that yields a big impact,” said Sarah Shields, an interior designer in Arizona.

Add a Robe

A plush new robe feels indulgent. Install a hook for that robe so it has a designated place to stay dry and ready.

Create Comfort

A cushy bath mat adds comfort when you step out of the shower or stand at the sink. Look for options with memory foam for extra softness.

Upgrade Everyday Items

Keep daily necessities in attractive containers instead of stuffed in drawers in their original packaging. Decorative boxes from dollar stores are inexpensive, or wash out a few mustard jars for a set of glass containers to hold cotton balls, Q-tips and floss picks.

Light a Candle

Don’t overdo it, but a candle on the counter, by the tub, or on the toilet tank with a box of matches adds a pleasant touch.

Budget Bathroom Makeover: $25 to $50+

A little decor can make the bathroom feel inviting and bring a smile.

“I enjoy subtle, whimsical touches that surprise you when you enter. I have a tiny figurine that’s actually flashing in one of my planters — it’s about a quarter of an inch tall,” said Shields. “You should have things that make you grin.”

She often shops at Society6.com for an affordable, playful shower curtain and matching accessories.

Decor can also be practical. Shields recommends a light shelf — a simple board across a front window. Placing small items there doesn’t block daylight and actually reflects light onto the ceiling and back into the room.

“A light shelf can hold extra pampering items such as candles, a diffuser or pretty bath soaps displayed in a glass jar,” she said.

You can also craft some DIY wall art to complete your low-cost bathroom refresh.

Budget Bathroom Makeover: $25 to $300+

Spiffing up a bathroom often requires a modest outlay that can pay dividends when selling the house, said Judy Anderson, a realtor with Re/Max Action First in St. Petersburg, Fla.

“For older bathrooms, I typically recommend a freestanding vanity with a sink from one of the big-box home centers,” she said.

Small vanities with sinks can start around $95 at Home Depot and Lowe’s. If a new vanity is out of reach, consider painting the existing one and swapping the faucet. (Pro tip: Use cabinet paint rather than wall paint.) A quart of cabinet paint and basic faucets often start near $25 each.

You might also replace the vanity light fixture. Expect to pay about $20 to $50.

“Worn, faded, or outdated tile doesn’t always need removal — it can be reglazed,” Anderson noted.

Costs vary, but tubs can start at roughly $250. Reglazing tub tiles might add about $300. If the current tile is white or bone, you have freedom to select any glaze color.

Small updates can also include inexpensive decor swaps or installing shelving and hooks for added utility. For more compact renovations or ideas focused on affordability, check out bathroom remodel ideas on a budget for inspiration.
