Consider checking out a dollar retailer.

Dollar General announced plans to introduce fresh produce in 450 stores in 2018, according to an earnings call reported last week.

The bargain chain intends to revamp 1,000 of its outlets nationwide, concentrating on enlarging cooler space in its “traditional plus” format locations. That renovation will often double the amount of refrigerated merchandise available in many stores, Supermarket News notes.

Dollar General started experimenting with fresh produce during a 2017 remodel of roughly 100 sites.

The chain operates more than 14,000 stores across 44 states and opened over 1,300 new locations in 2017 alone.

Roughly a quarter of Dollar General’s stock is priced at $1, Bloomberg reports. The retailer also accepts SNAP benefits through EBT.

While other large grocers are investing in delivery, meal kits and digital ordering, Dollar General sticks to a straightforward model with smaller footprints and a narrower assortment.

When Savinly compared three dollar-store chains in 2016, we discovered Dollar General tended to be the most expensive.
