Life moves quickly. There isn’t always a chance to clip coupons — even the digital ones.
Good news: you don’t have to.
If you pay for groceries (or meals out) with a Visa card, there’s a service that will automatically locate and apply savings for you — at no cost.
It’s called Trim, an automated assistant that operates through Facebook Messenger.
How it actually works
Getting started with Trim is simple, though it involves a few steps.
First, sign up and connect your Messenger account (make sure you have the latest version installed).

After linking your account, Trim will message you on Facebook Messenger.
While Trim links with your bank, it presents several options you can explore right away, including Trim Savings.

Log in with Facebook or email and you’ll be able to attach your Visa card. Unfortunately, MasterCard and American Express aren’t supported by this feature.

Within about a day you’ll receive an offer via Messenger. Trim advertises that newcomers may qualify for up to $30 in cash-back promotions shortly after signing up.
When Savinly editor Alex Carter registered, he was instantly offered $1 back on any $5 grocery purchase (usable 10 times), $1 statement credit for spending $5 at a U.S. restaurant, and $10 back for spending $20 at any U.S. movie theater.

Not too shabby, right?
How are you reimbursed with Trim?
After you enable an offer, you’ll receive a credit on your Visa card within about 5–7 days.
The next time you complete an eligible purchase with that Visa card, the credit will apply toward the cost of your purchase.
What about debit cards?
You might be asking: What if I use a Visa debit card when I buy groceries?
That still works. If you’re using a Visa debit card, choose “credit” rather than “debit” at the terminal. Also, don’t enter a Personal Identification Number (PIN).
That’s all there is to it.
Trim says you can expect a complimentary money-saving offer roughly once per week.
And yes — there’s no charge for this service.
Other no-cost features from Trim
Beyond grocery savings, Trim functions as a free financial aide.
After connecting, you’ll get a dashboard inside your Messenger conversation with Trim. From there you can try to negotiate your Comcast bill down, review subscription services and cancel ones you no longer use or forgot about.
Trim also displays your account balance and recent transactions. Want to know how much you spent at Starbucks last month so you can plan your budget? Ask the bot — you’ll get a near-instant response.
