“You know, you could stash away a lot more cash if you’d stop buying that pricey coffee.” And if they don’t say it out loud? They’re probably thinking it.
But you can still enjoy your coffee and cut costs with some easy Starbucks tricks. After all, visiting Starbucks is about more than just caffeine — it’s a place to meet people, have solitude without feeling isolated, get work done, skip alcohol, and mark life’s highs and lows.
13 Ways to Save Money at Starbucks
Dropping Starbucks from your routine isn’t always practical. So here are 13 smart Starbucks money-savers to help you keep the habit without spending as much.
1. Join Starbucks Rewards
New members of Starbucks Rewards can snag a free drink as part of a welcome promotion! This offer usually applies during the first week after registering and generally requires a qualifying purchase, but it’s a handy bonus for newcomers to the app.
2. Earn Rewards Points
After signing up for Starbucks Rewards, you can redeem stars for free beverages. When you pay as you go with cash or a debit/credit card, you earn one star per dollar. Load money onto a digital Starbucks Card in the app and you’ll earn two stars per dollar spent.
(You’ll also find partner perks, like Delta SkyMiles when you link accounts.)
Beyond free brewed coffee and tea refills, members can claim a free handcrafted beverage at 200 stars. The app frequently runs offers that grant bonus stars too.
With no extra promotions, expect to shell out roughly $100 to $200 before you collect enough stars for a free drink (depending on payment method and if you take advantage of double-star days). That’s a fair amount to invest just to earn a single free beverage, so it may not be worthwhile for everyone. Still, Rewards members do get a free drink on their birthday.
3. Buy Discounted Starbucks Gift Cards
A top Starbucks tip is to purchase discounted gift cards to extend the reach of your coffee budget. Sites like CardCookie, GCX and other discounted card marketplaces can help you get more value. Buying a gift card below face value gives you extra buying power at Starbucks.
CardCookie sometimes runs out of Starbucks cards, but you can subscribe to email alerts to know when they’re restocked. GCX often has cards available for up to 4% off — that saves you $2 on a $50 card.
4. Use Credit Card Reward Points for Starbucks Gift Cards
Many credit card rewards programs let you redeem points for retailer gift cards. Check your card’s reward portal to see if Starbucks gift cards are an option.
5. Split One Drink Into Two
This tactic requires a steady hand. Order a Venti latte and pour it into two Tall cups to share with a friend. You’ll essentially pay about $2.72 per Tall instead of roughly $4.45 each. Some locations may charge a small fee (25–50 cents) for the extra cup, but you’ll likely still save. If you can’t find a companion, bring a thermal cup and save the second half for later.
6. Scale Back Your Usual Order
Instead of ordering elaborate, costly concoctions, get a similar flavor for less. Order a drip coffee with syrup and add your own milk and sweetener.
You can make it even cheaper by requesting whipped cream rather than syrup — a little dollop (which is free) makes many drinks sweeter and more enjoyable.
7. Supersize Your Cup
Order a “tall drip in a grande cup” to get more room for milk while only paying the price of a tall. Need an even larger portion? Try the same trick asking for a Venti cup.
8. Light on the Ice, Please
Ask for light ice with iced coffee. Full ice can leave you with more water and less coffee. While this doesn’t reduce the bill, it gives you more actual drink per cup. If you want your beverage cold without diluted ice, bring a pre-chilled tumbler and use it as your reusable cup.
9. Assemble Your Own Drink
Cut the price of an iced latte by ordering just one or two espresso shots and adding milk you bring from home. Or order two espresso shots over ice. This approach often trims $1 to $1.50 off the usual cost.
10. Bring A Cup
Starbucks gives a 10-cent discount when you bring a reusable cup — and those small savings add up. You’ll also earn 25 extra stars in the rewards app for using your own cup.
11. Don’t Buy Bottled Water
You can save money by asking for a cup of tap water instead of purchasing bottled water. Baristas are usually happy to hand you a cup, and you won’t pay $2.65 for a plastic bottle. Note that some locations may charge for the cup.
12. Order a Coffee Traveler
If you’re with a group of two to 12 people, order a Coffee Traveler of Pike Place Roast, Veranda Blend, Dark Roast or Decaf Pike Place Roast. Priced around $20, these travelers provide roughly 96 fl. oz. — the equivalent of twelve 8-oz cups — and include cups to go. That brings the per-serving cost down to about $1.66, compared with around $2.50 for a typical small coffee.
13. A Treat That’s Always Free
Want an extra little perk? Ask for a Puppuccino — a small cup of whipped cream for your dog. Most stores will provide one at no charge (often you’ll need to buy a human drink to receive it, and you can request it inside or at the drive-through).
