Shoppers who prefer not to apply for another credit card to get store perks now have an alternative at Macy’s.
The department store revealed this month that its Star Rewards program has added a bronze tier that’s open to all customers, no matter how they pay.
Members at the bronze level qualify for Star Money Days, exclusive promotions and surprise birthday gifts. During Star Money Days, shoppers can rack up bonus points on qualifying purchases. When you collect 1,000 points you can exchange them for $10 in Star Money, which is valid for use without merchandise exclusions for 30 days.
Enrollment is available online, in-store or via the Macy’s mobile app.
Is the Bronze Star Tier Macy’s Answer to Plenti?
The timing of Macy’s announcement follows news that the Plenti rewards network will be shut down this summer. Macy’s had been one of the original partners in Plenti, which let consumers accumulate 1,000 points at any participating retailer and redeem them for $10 at a store of their choosing. Macy’s left the Plenti alliance earlier this spring.
American Express manages both Plenti and Macy’s credit accounts. The program’s silver, gold and platinum tiers remain limited to credit cardholders, who enjoy perks such as discounts, complimentary shipping and additional benefits based on how much they spend.
In January Macy’s stated plans to shutter 11 outlets. Since 2015 the retailer has closed upwards of 120 locations, according to CNBC.
To offset softer traffic the chain has been rolling out Macy’s Backstage bargain sections inside many stores — and a handful of standalone stores — since 2015.
