Hey, Safeway Shoppers, We Have 8 Tips to Save You Big on Groceries

Safeway Club Card Savings Tips

If Safeway is part of your regional grocery landscape, you’re in good company. The chain has been around since 1915 and has a long history of helping shoppers keep grocery bills down.

The moniker “Safeway” originally suggested a “safe way” to shop — paying with cash instead of running up credit. Today you can use cash, debit, credit or whatever modern payment option you prefer at Safeway locations. And there are multiple ways to shop smarter to stretch your food budget.

Here are eight practical tips to help you save money at Safeway.

1. Enroll in a Safeway Club Card

The Safeway Club Card unlocks sales and member-only discounts at your nearby Safeway. Sign up and link your phone number to your account so you don’t have to carry a physical card.

2. Use Safeway’s Just for U

Just for U is Safeway’s platform for electronic coupons. Register and attach your account to your Club Card to clip coupons before shopping. Then present your Club Card at checkout to get the savings.

Just for U can also alert you when items you buy regularly go on sale.

3. Rack Up Safeway Gas Rewards

Sign up for Safeway Gas Rewards to accumulate one point for each dollar you spend at Safeway groceries or at its pharmacy. Buying retail gift cards at Safeway typically earns two points per dollar. Redeem points for savings at the pump.

Surpass 100 points and you’ll receive 10 cents off per gallon; at 200 points you’ll get 20 cents off per gallon. Then you can start earning toward your next discount. Track your totals in the Safeway mobile app. Participating stations include Sunoco, Chevron and Texaco.

4. Buy in Bulk When It’s Discounted

Safeway often promotes multi-item discounts. Keep an eye out for two-for-one deals, two-for-$4 or two-for-$5 sales. Occasionally you’ll find exceptional bargains, like house-brand yogurt priced 10-for-$4.

5. Try Store-Label Products

As someone who shops Safeway regularly, I lean on their private-label items to stock the pantry. Signature products are widely available, and you’ll also find selections like O Organics and Lucerne dairy. These options usually cost much less than comparable national brands.

6. Move Your Prescriptions to Safeway Pharmacy

Consolidate errands by using the Safeway pharmacy. Transfer prescriptions from another provider or fill a new one at Safeway and you’ll receive a $25 store gift card. You’ll also get a prescription stamp card — after five fills you can redeem it for a $50 Safeway gift card.

Note that government-sponsored plans don’t qualify for this reward, but Safeway offers active and retired military members a 10% coupon at the pharmacy when they present ID.

7. Skip the Separate Liquor Run

A last-minute liquor-store dash before guests arrive can be a pain. Buy your wine and spirits at Safeway instead: mix-and-match six bottles or bottles-plus-spirits and save 10% on the purchase. Watch for BOGO deals on select brands, too.

8. Redeem Ibotta Rebates for Extra Cash Back

Savinly Readers know that Ibotta is a simple way to earn cash back on grocery purchases. Browse rebates in the Ibotta app while you build your shopping list, then upload your receipt after shopping to claim the offers.
