If you’ve recently tried to purchase any electronics (or even a new or used vehicle), you’ve likely noticed one thing — it’s extraordinarily difficult right now.

Ongoing supply-chain disruptions have been particularly troublesome for buyers of devices that require microchips, and there’s a widespread shortage of those components.

“This holiday season, the most sought-after electronics are the items most affected by supply-chain problems,” says Jeff Zhou, cofounder of Fig Loans. “That covers the latest consoles, such as the PS5, Xbox Series X and Nintendo Switch OLED. Likewise, many graphics cards like the NVIDIA 3080 and 3090 are scarce, which has driven prices and demand through the roof.”

But it’s not just electronics that are hard to find this year. Numerous imported goods are also encountering delays.

“Broadly speaking, clothing and products manufactured in the U.S. are seeing fewer supply-chain delays compared with items made overseas,” Zhou adds. “That’s because the primary bottleneck right now is the ongoing difficulty moving shipments through major ports. Products produced domestically aren’t facing those holdups, so you’ll probably receive them sooner.”

Easy-to-Find Gifts in Abundant Supply

So while Santa once routinely tucked tablets and phones under the tree, this year you — and he — may need to get a bit more inventive.

Below are 12 no-fuss gift suggestions you can buy today for the people on your list. We name a few brands, but there are plenty of alternative versions available at your neighborhood stores.

Matching Pajamas

Make Christmas morning extra special with the ultra-soft flannel pajama sets from Vermont Flannel Co. Choose matching sets for the whole clan, or pick coordinating pairs for you and a close friend. Beyond pajamas, Vermont Flannel Co. also offers quality flannel shirts and a clever DIY Quilt Kit.

Pendleton Throws

Help someone stay warm this winter with one of the classic throws from Pendleton. Made in the U.S., these blankets are ideal for refreshing a tired sofa, updating a bedroom, or simply wrapping up by the fireplace.

Green Toys

If you’re worried about kids’ presents arriving late, check out the range at Green Toys. Based in California, this company produces inventive, battery-free toys and is committed to environmental impact. To date, they’ve recycled plastic from over 100 million milk jugs and counting.

Handmade Dog Toys

Don’t forget your favorite pup this holiday. Browse adorable dog toys made by US-based Etsy creators. From novelty doggy spritzers to antler chews, there’s something for every four-legged friend on your list.

An Intelligent Blender

For the health-obsessed person in your life, consider these smart blenders from Vitamix. Unlike many appliance makers, Vitamix seems to be dodging supply-chain problems (being U.S.-manufactured likely helps). So you can still tuck a “smart” appliance under the tree — even if it’s just an excellent blender.

High-end blenders run roughly $400 to $525, but you can save a bundle with a $99 Ninja blender/food-processor combo. If a smoothie machine is what they want, consider the $70 Ninja Pro with robust ice-crushing power.

Pizza Oven

For the pizza lovers on your list, gift them a reason to “get the grill going” with this pizza-oven grill insert from Kettle Pizza. Move over brick ovens — this holiday season’s pizza parties are coming straight off the backyard grill.

Wine & Spirits

In case you need reminding how delightful a bottle of favorite wine or liquor can be, consider gifting a fine bottle. Premium wine and spirits are timeless presents. Visit your neighborhood liquor store and pick a bottle that will please the dedicated oenophile in your life.

Local Arts & Crafts

Support nearby artisans, makers and jewelers this season by shopping at holiday markets and pop-up events. Check local listings and community calendars to find a fair where you can discover unique gifts for everyone on your list.

Subscription Boxes

Want a hassle-free gift that lets someone try something new? A subscription box could be the answer. Some favorites include The Wordy Traveler, Brother Vellies, Ship Sunshine, and Undiscovered Artisan.

Gift Cards

Practical? Yes. Boring? Maybe. But gift cards remain one of the most useful presents for someone who already seems to have everything. Give a card to their go-to electronics shop (so they can order that phone when it’s restocked) or a classic restaurant gift card for a night out.

Knickknacks

If you’re stumped about what to buy, spend a few minutes browsing Uncommon Goods. Think of it as a blend of Target and World Market — but with items made in the U.S. and largely unaffected by global shipping woes. A special holiday ornament always makes a thoughtful gift.

Something to Read

Magazine subscriptions (yes, they still exist) can cost as little as $10 per year. Topics cover cooking, cars, fashion, travel and more. Smithsonian magazine, the official publication of the Smithsonian Institution in D.C., offers 12 issues for just $12, and the gift subscription includes a Smithsonian membership. For book ideas, browse NPR’s best books of 2021, which lists over 360 titles sorted by subject.
