With millions of people already casting ballots this election cycle, those lacking dependable transportation may struggle to make it to polling places.
To help, Lyft and Uber are offering complimentary and discounted rides to polling locations through Election Day, Nov. 3.
Below is how you can obtain inexpensive or free transportation to vote.
Lyft: Affordable or Free Rides for Voters
Lyft is partnering with a variety of nonprofit organizations to provide voter transportation, including:
- League of Women Voters
- National Federation of the Blind
- Student Veterans of America
- National Urban League
- Voto Latino Foundation
Participating groups will distribute promo codes that can be redeemed for rides to polling sites, and in states that use exclusively vote-by-mail drop boxes, codes can be used to reach registered dropbox locations.
Uber: Reduced-Price Rides and Free Eats at the Polls
Uber is providing 50% off roundtrip fares to and from election sites (up to $7 per leg), meaning you can get up to $14 covered for both trips. The discount is valid for car trips as well as bike and scooter rides.
Expecting long waits at some polling places, Uber Eats has teamed up with Pizza to the Polls to dispatch food trucks to 25 cities, handing out complimentary meals and offering live music to help voters while they wait.
Giving discounted or free transport around Election Day isn’t new for app-based ride services. Lyft and Uber — and car-sharing outfits like Zipcar — have offered free or reduced rides during past presidential elections, including 2016.
